| Here's my entry for the Sweet Tomatoes crEATe contest, where customers are asked to submit creative food combinations from their salad bar/buffet. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera, so we had to use the crappy camera on Joe's crackberry.
The Sweet Crunch-wich Sunflower seeds, raisins, strawberries, and plain croutons together make this sandwich delightfully sweet and crunchy. The subtle sweetness of Indian grain bread completes the sandwich. This may be a rather unconventional sandwich, but you'd be surprised at how delicious it is!
This sandwich was just a spur-of-the-moment idea - I wasn't really aiming to win the contest or anything. I was just curious about what kind of coupon they would reward me with (turns out it's your standard BOGO meal coupon) & thought it would be fun. I've got to admit that I was skeptical about this sandwich, but it was actually surprisingly tasty!
Joe commented that it was kind of dry, but that wasn't an issue for me because I'm a carbohydrate lover & am used to eating dry bread/cereal/etc. However, I guess the dryness could be remedied by adding more strawberries or lettuce.
The end.

| so i'm doing this again, the 2nd time in a row. my excuse is that Jason tagged me, but really I just wanted to :)
1 // there is a small part of me that will eternally be a teenybopper, i fear. - i loved the Twilight series - i like the Jonas Brothers' songs (but i'm not like a raving mad fan who proposes marriage to them & has their biographies memorized though!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScXLHgPcZuc - i like some of Miley Cyrus' songs & stuff - i like cheesy pop music nothing's wrong with any of these things per se... except for the fact that i'm not 13 years old! oh and also - i am WAY too eager to do things like this. also, surveys & such.
2 // i toyed w/the idea of having our first dance song be "All My Life" by K-Ci & JoJo. Ah... Gra-cie & JoeJoe dancing to K-Ci & JoJo.... HAHA.
3 // i looooooooooooooove dairy products! cheese! ice cream! yogurt! (but not milk. yuck) however, i am slightly lactose intolerant. slightly = i don't get the runs like completely lactose intolerant folks do; i just get gassy. ah, i'm such a lady!
4 // i like talking about stuff that people would consider TMI. (see the one before this as an example)
5 // i like watching wild birds. i'm not like an avid bird-watcher or anything, but i do take more interest in them than your average jane. however, i do not usually find pet birds as interesting.
6 // when i was in middle school, i earned a black belt in tae kwon do. one of my new year's resolutions for a few years in a row was "Do not punch or kick my sisters." i wasn't that big of a bully - i just wanted to utilize what i learned in tae kwon do!!
7 // i am insanely good at wasting time on the internet. one of my favorite sites is http://www.mymomisafob.com (also check out mydadisafob.com)
8 // one of my friends bought a house & his monthly mortgage payments are LOWER than my monthly rent for a 1-bedroom apartment! TX big house >>> CA apartment. it's kind of sad to think that with the money joe & i will be spending on rent, we could be buying a house! oh well. at least the weather's better here :) :)
9 // i periodically check www.click2houston.com - it makes me feel like i'm not so far away from home. i think one of my classmates from middle school was featured in a story for kidnapping a child. she had the same name & the pic looked similar... but i haven't seen her in > 10 years, so who knows if the pic was really her.
10 // i almost never watch TV anymore. yay for free online streaming, esp. abc! nbc also has shows i like, but the website/interface is less user-friendly.
11 // several years ago, i used to wish i were a supermodel. thankfully, i came to my senses - no way would i want to, even if i were tall enough. being a supermodel sucks. you can't eat whatever you want, so you're cranky. your livelihood depends on your looks, which of course go downhill with age, so you get plastic surgery to try to turn back time. people look at you like you're a piece of meat. on the surface it may seem glamorous, but really it must be pretty miserable.
12 // in elementary school, i wanted to be an author/writer. now i can't stand writing, unless it's for fun (like this!)
13 // i eat my cereal dry. i also eat copious amounts of bread without drinking water. joe always marvels at this ability & the fact that i actually prefer to do it this way! i'm going to get kidney stones one day. (when i'm eating something that is waaaay too hot, i refuse to drink anything to quench the burning.)
14 // today i went to a dance cardio class. i was embarrassed because i sucked at doing the dance moves, but i was actually having a blast regardless. it was the most fun i've had exercising in a loooong time.
15 // i go through very distinct phases where i'll do something almost every day & then i'll get sick of it & switch to something else very suddenly. breakfast phases i've gone through, where i ate the same thing over & over: - handful of almonds (this was back when i had classes, so i had to grab-and-go. sucked.) - yogurt + frozen blueberries + cereal - jamba juice - fraiche (organic yogurt w/fruit) - waffles w/peanut butter - My current phase: starbucks (esp. their "perfect oatmeal") - but i don't drink coffee
16 // when i find a youtube video that i like, i watch it over & over. then i forget about it. then i remember it again a few days / months / years later & watch it several more times. for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEfUQQ-LUm4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teuz7hBAIWM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NECNIKmMgS8 (mostly 1:10 - 3:00)

| Mamma mia, I just realized something about myself as I was browsing one of my favorite websites (http://www.mymomisafob.com)
I am more like a fobby Asian mom than I'd like to admit.
(YIKES!)
I... - collect plastic & paper bags for reuse... and the nice ones are especially prized (http://stuffkoreanmomslike.blogspot.com/2008/07/42-paper-and-plastic-bags.html)
- protect my arms [and sometimes hands] from the sun while i'm driving - i admit that i have (and utilize) arm sheaths like the picture, but mine are fashionably solid-white, not multicolor printed (http://mymomisafob.com/2008/10/20/reader-michelle-sends-us-a-picture-of-her-fob-momma-on-the-road/)
- have walked around w/an umbrella not bc it was raining but bc it was sunny (HOWEVER i've kicked myself of this habit - haven't done it (regularly) since 2007) (http://mymomisafob.com/2008/10/29/dont-mess-with-this-momma/)
- keep the tags & stickers on stuff, including my TV and couch
- have a huge stash of restaurant napkins in my car (http://stuffkoreanmomslike.blogspot.com/2008/03/23-stealing-napkins-and-condiments.html)
however, i do NOT... (at least not yet...) x wear those darth vader mask/face visors (http://mymomisafob.com/2008/11/30/representin/ or http://mymomisafob.com/2008/10/24/fob-mom-head-gear/) x write with incorrect spelling & grammar (unless it's on purpose like when i'm blogging... bc writing correctly can be such a drag sometimes) (http://mymomisafob.com/2008/10/17/1337-h4x0r-intel-programmer-mom/) x play matchmaker x find anything wrong with owning two dogs (don't get me started on this...) x need help surfing the internet x tell people they're fat (http://stuffkoreanmomslike.blogspot.com/2008/03/11-telling-people-they-are-fat.html) x cover my furniture with clear plastic
anyway, i love asian moms!! including my mom & my FMIL (that's wedding-blog-speak for "future mother-in-law"). i realize a lot of these things are not universally true of all asian moms, etc. it's just funny that i have more in common with them than i ever would've thought... and i'm not even middle-aged yet. i'm sure the similarities will only become more numerous over time. if so, i'd like to acquire the delicious cooking skills first!
oh and since i never got around to posting this earlier, i might as well do it now... (go here http://x90.xanga.com/7e3f1be050c32219380138/z171918577.png if you can't see the pic) wheeeeeee :) a month later & it still feels niiiiice.

| wow, i passed my qualifying exam.
for sure it was tough, and i'm just so glad it's over with. thanks to all the people who've prayed for me / encouraged me / helped me when i needed it most - rosa, jonathan, trupti, lucia, my advisor anne, my lab, older & wiser genetics students, my small group, and especially joe and heather!
my lab is so fantastic - after i walked out of my qual, they busted out the champagne & sparkling something & a delicious cake to celebrate. they even decorated my new bench and desk - streamers! candy! CHEESY SNACKS! mara even gave me my own little potted plant :)
now it's time for my celebration weekend. gonna pick up Joe from the airport, and he'll be here for 9 days straight! yay :) and then next saturday, my fabulous photographer Sharon and her boyfriend Ivan are coming too, to do our engagement portraits in SF. man, it's gonna be great!
praise God :) woohoo!!!
